Here are some quotes from the Hobbit concerning the Mirkwood elves, though this is the most inaccurate of books it still has a few bits of interesting lore that may or may not be of some use later in the development of this tradition....
1) " There were many there, elvish - looking folk, all dressed in green and brown and sitting on sawn rings of felled trees in a great circle. There was a fire in their midst and there were torches fastened to some of the trees round about; but most splendid sight of all: they were eating and drinking and laughing merrily. The smell of the roast meats was so enchanting...."
(This was when bilbo and the dwarves first observed the Mirkwood elves...the date is August 22)
2) "Up they got again, and this time the result was more disastrous....At the head of a long line of feasters sat a woodland king with a crown of leaves upon his golden hair....The elvish folk were passing bowls from hand to hand and across the fires, and some were harping and many were singing. Their gleaming hair was twined with flowers; green and white gems glinted on their collars and their faces and their songs were filled with mirth. Loud and clear and fair were those songs......"
3) A cultural observation of the Mirkwood elves : "If they have a fault, it is a distrust of strangers"
4) There was also mention of the beech being a favorite tree of the wood elves.
5) " In a great hall with pillars hewn out of the living stone sat the Elvenking on a chair of carven wood. On his head was a crown of berries and red leaves for the autumn was come again. In the spring he wore a crown of woodland flowers. In his hand he held a carven staff of oak."
The great autumn feast takes place in Mirkwood on September 21..
This all sounds pretty celtic in feel to me....with the woodland king on the throne with the wooden staff thing....Its a start in the exploration of the spirituality of the elves...
any thoughts or suggestions?
