MANWE - Manwe is the greatest vala, and most dear to Iluvatar. He is the King of Arda and all who live there. He loves all wind, clouds, and the creatures of the air. He dwells on Taniquetil, the highest point in Middle Earth, in the tower of Oiolosse with Varda, his queen. When he sits on his throne in Oiolosse and Varda is with him he sees further than an other being - past mists, over oceans, mountains and valleys. He is wiser than any other in knowing the intent of Iluvatar.
ULMO - He is the Lord of waters and moves often with them staying no where for very long. He wanders alone and goes only to the counsels of the Valar that are most important. He was close to Manwe before the Earth was formed but they have grown apart. He is the Lord of the Sea and knows its depths, those that none other has seen. His voice is deep like the ocean, and often he walks on the shores of lakes and seas and make music with his great horns of white shell- the Ulumuri. It is said that those who hear the music of Ulmo never forget it and long ever after for the sea. His energy is the “veins of the world” and information comes to him from all over that he alone knows. He loves both Men and Elves, and never turned from them even when thay had angered the Valar.
AULE - Aule is the lord of all materials from which Arda is made and crafted much with Ulmo and Manwe when the world first came to being. He is the master of all crafts and is the one who wrought all the gems and ores of the earth. He was most beloved by the Noldor to whom he taught much of his skills. Aule was hated by Melkor because they were most similar in powers. They both desired to make things new that had not been thought of before and loved praise of their creations; but Aule was loyal to Iluvatar and did not destroy the creations of others, nor did he envy their gifts. Melkor was jelouse and hateful and destroyed all he could of other’s works. It is Aule who made the first Dwarves. He longed for the coming of the Children of Iluvatar to have others to whom he caoud teach his skills, and could not wait for them to come by Iluvatar’s will. He knew not what the Children would look like and so made Dwarves as they appear today, small but strong. When he had finished his work Iluvatar came to him and he realised what he had done. He had made the dwarves from his thought so they could only move and speak as he thought. Aule realised that this was not as he wished it and also fest shamed fr working against Iluvatar’s will. So he took up his hammer to destroy the Dwarves, but out of compassion Iluvatar had given them will and life of their own so they shrank back and pleaded for their lives. Then Aule thanked Iluvatar many times; but then the One told him that, though his creations may live they could not come befor his own Children and often bitterness would come between the two kinds. So Aule took The seven Dwarves to far away places to await the coming of the Firstborn Children.
OROME - Orome is the Lord of Strength and anger and of the Forests. He loved Middle Earth and even after coming to Valinor continued to visit it often. He hunts monsters and melkor’s creatures. He loves horses and hounds and the trees, which is where he got his other name: Aldaron. His horn is called Valaroma. He rides a shimmering white horse named nahar.
MANDOS - Mandos’s real name is Namo and mandos is where he dwells, though he is often called by that name. He is a Feanturi - master of the spirits. It is Namo who calls the dead to Valinor and the House of the Dead. He knows everything in the future except that which is hidden by Iluvatar. Because of this he is called the Doomsman of the Valar. But only when asked to by Manwe does he reveal his dooms.
LORIEN - Lorien, though his common name, is actually the place where he lives. He is Irmo, another of the Feanturi. He is the Lord of dreams and visions. He is also a master gardener, and his are the fairest in the world. His spouse is Este, the healer. She heals all hurts and weariness and gives refreashment from the fountains in Lorien. Often the other Valar come to Lorien to find rest. TULKAS - Tulkas is also a lord of strength and bravery like Orome. Thought he has greater strength, he is slower to anger and laughs in the faces of his enemies, even Melkor himself. He can fun faster than any being and is never weary so he loves contests of strength. He travels with no horse; because of his natural speed he needs none. He has golden hair and carres little for anything but the preasent, so does not give counsil much. Orome’s sister, Nessa is his wife. NIENNA - Little less hreater than Yavanna is Nienna, the sister of Mandos and Lorien, the Feanturi. She, like Ulmo, wanders alone. She knows all grief and sorrow and her song at the begginning of the world was one of lamentation and so it was woven into the sounds of the world. She wept for all the hurts suffered at the hands of Melkor, and visits often the Halls of Mandos to bring strength to the spirits there. From sorrow she teaches wisdom and endurance and hope.
