Ilmarë Meaning: Contains the root "Ilma" or "starlight" Kind Maia Lifespan Immortal, no known beginning or ending
Ilmarë was a maia whom Tolkien did not write very much about. She is almost unknown, and her great powers are still a mystery. In the Silmarillion, she is only briefly mentioned in the Valaquenta:
"Chief among the Maiar of Valinor whose names are remembered in the histories of the Elder Days are Ilmarë, the handmaid of Varda (...)"
From this passage we see that Ilmarë most probably was one of the mightiest and most powerful of the Maiar, and together with Eönwë, the Herald of Manwë, they were the highest ranking beings under the Valar.
There is however other versions of Ilmarë. In The Book of Lost Tales 1, Tolkien writes that Erinti was the offspring of Manwë and Varda. Erinti later became the handmaid of Varda.
In The Lost Road and other Writings, Tolkien wrote: "The children of Manwë and Varda are Fionwë Urion, their son, and Ilmar, their daughter; and these are the eldest of the Gods." This means that after Tolkien left the name Erinti and replaced it with Ilmar. In a note made some time after that, Tolkien then writes: "With him [Manwë] dwells as wife Varda the maker of the stars, immortal lady of the heights, whose name is holy. Fionwë and Imarë are their son and daughter." By the time of that note, Tolkien had given Ilmarë her name in the latest form.
