Ossë Meaning: Terror
Kind Maia
Lifespan Immortal, no known beginning or ending
Ossë's chief delight lies in the waters of Middle Earth, being a vassal of Ulmo. He is accountable for the isles and seas which wash upon the shores of Middle-earth. However, unlike Ulmo, Ossë does not take joy in the deep waters, much preferring the coasts and the seas. Ossë also obtains joy from the winds of Manwë, taking pleasure in storms and tempests.
Ossë's spouse was known as Uinen, the Lady of the Seas. She was held in great reverence by many creatures of Middle-earth, but most especially by the people of Númenor, who regarded Uinen with such reverence as they gave to the Valar. Uinen often worked to contain the temper and rage of her husband, Ossë, and for this restraining was held in even greater admiration.
In the days of old, Ossë and his wife Uinen most enjoyed the coasts of Nevrast, especially the area about Mount Taras.
Melkor despised the sea, for it was forever beyond his control. Therefore, in the Elder Days of Arda, he worked unceasingly to draw the allegiance of Ossë to himself. In return for Ossë's adherence, Melkor pledged to Ossë the domination of all the realm and power of Ulmo. As a result, there was a great uproar in the waters which laid vast ruin to all the land, and Uinen, at the request of Aule, restrained Ossë and brought him before Ulmo in search of his pardon. Ossë was granted his pardon, whereas he returned to the allegiance of Ulmo, to which he ever remained faithful. Although Ossë was granted pardon, the lust for violence which filled him never wholly left. Often, Ossë would rage in the seas by his own will without any command or order from his lord, Ulmo. As a result, although the sailors and mariners of Middle-earth loved Ossë, they did not trust him.
Of all the races of Middle-earth, the Teleri were ever the subjects of affection of Ossë. After the departure of the Vanyar and Noldor to Valinor, Ossë, along with his wife Uinen, came often to the Teleri along the coasts of Nevrast, teaching them all manners of sea-lore and sea-music. However, at the great grief of Ossë, Ulmo later came to bear the Teleri to Valinor, and most of them were willing to do so. Therefore, upon their departure to Valinor, Ossë called to them, and requested for the island which bore them to the Blessed Realm to be stayed. Ulmo granted the request of Ossë, whereas Ossë rooted the island to the depths of the seas in the Bay of Eldemar. This island was called Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, and often Ossë came among the Teleri, just as he had done whilst they stayed upon the shores of Beleriand. Ossë, at the bidding of Ulmo and the other Valar, taught the Teleri the art of shipbuilding, although it grieved him to do so. In addition, Ossë would often come to the Isle of Balar, for he was a great friend of Círdan the Shipwright.
Ossë was also responsible for the rising of Númenor out of the seas, and upon this isle the faithful of the Atani later dwelt.
