Tilion Meaning: Unknown
Kind Maia
Lifespan Immortal, no known beginning or ending
Among the great Valar and Maiar there was Tilion, also called Ilinsor, who is the Steersman of the Moon.
Before this, however, he was a hunter of the company of Oromë. He was a lover of silver, having a silver bow; and instead of resting in the woods of Oromë, he often would go to Lórien and rest by Lórellin, the pools of Estë. This was in the light of Telperion, the White Tree, in which Tilion begged to be given the task of tending to.
After the White Tree was destroyed by Morgoth and Ungoliant, the great ship Isil, the Moon, also called Rána or Sil, Ilsaluntë, Minethlos, and Crithosceleg, was first wrought by the last silver rose of Telperion. This was done because Telperion was elder than Laurelin.
Tilion's ship is that of very fine, very smooth glass, and the rods made of ice. There was a great cup that held the rose of Telperion, for Aulë refused to disassemble it. Uinen made masts of mist, silver fish scales, foam, and tiny stars.
Tilion was made ready and sailed seven times before Anar rose, who was more powerful then he. Because of this, there was both rivalry and enticement from Tilion to Arien, the Sun Maiden.
Their courses, chosen by Varda, were simple: one ship at the East, while the other at the West. Tilion was wayward though, and entranced by Anar. He came to close to her, scorching the Moon, and making part of it dark. Varda then changed it: there would be a time for darkness. She commanded Tilion to go under the World, but again he was wayward, and went in uncertain pace, always drawn to Anar.
Thereafter Tilion went to Valinor little, passing over the West fast, going into the chasm beyond the Outer Sea and to the very roots of Arda.
However, Morgoth, the Dark Lord, did not like Isil and tried to assail Tilion, and there was a fight beneath the stars, but Tilion won, and rose glorious, as he still does
