Uinen Meaning: Lady of the Seas Kind Maia Lifespan Immortal, no known beginning or ending
Uinen was a Maia also known as the Lady of the Seas. She entered Arda with Ulmo and her spouse Ossë, who was a vassal of Ulmo. Uinen had great love for all the creatures that lived in the sea and she always gave them her protection. It was said that all the water surfaces under the sky were covered by Uinen's hair.
Along with her spouse Ossë, Uinen governed the waves and the movements of the inner seas. But Ossë delighted himself in storms, and, thus, it was always to Uinen to whome the mariners offered their prayers so she would restrain Ossë. It was also Uinen who, when, at the beginning of time, Melkor tried to corrupt Ossë to his service promising him great power, had constrained her husband and made him seek pardon before the Valar
. The Teleri had much love for Uinen, for it had been Ossë and Uinen who befriended them at the mouths of the river Sirion. And great love did Uinen also have for the Telerim for she wept for their mariners after the kinslaying at Alqualondë.
The Númenóreans were for a long time protected by Uinen, and they respected her and considered her as an equal to the Valar. When Aldarion founded the Guild of Venturers In Númenor, the mariners called themselves "Uinendili," or the "Lovers of Uinen," out of the love and respect they had for her.
